SuperMask 4 and 12 Substrates are an exciting new innovation from ArrayIt® that provide atomically flat glass substrate slides with ultra-thin hydrophobic masks to create multiple reaction areas or wells on a single substrate slide. SuperMask allows users to print and react multiple microarrays per substrate slide, reducing surface chemistry cost for high-throughput analysis for research and diagnostics. The SuperMask hydrophobic boundaries are highly durable and available with SuperClean 2, SuperAmine 2, SuperAldehyde 2, SuperEpoxy 2 and SuperStreptavidin surface chemistries for the full spectrum of DNA and protein microarray applications.
Product Description SuperMask Substrates are manufactured using ArrayIt® SuperClean 2 glass substrates that provide superior homogenous topography for DNA and protein microarray applications. SuperMask Substrates are designed to empower processing and analysis of multiple microarray experiments on a single microarray substrate slide 25 x 76 mm. Round reaction areas promote even distribution of hybridization mixture across the entire microarray surface area with or without a cover slip and hybridization cassette.
These substrate slides are available in all surface chemistries to meet a wide variety of microarray applications. The substrates are partitioned into individual wells using an ultra-thin 75 µm chemically resistant hydrophobic mask permanently attached to the substrate slide. At 75 µm in height, the hydrophobic mask is sufficiently thin to fit into any microarray printer or scanner, and yet of sufficient height and hydrophobicity to prevent cross contamination with our without cover slips. The matte black mask finish and unique chemical properties prevent contributions to background noise in microarray scans.
Product Use SuperMask 4 Substrates slides have four 12 mm round reaction areas. SuperMask 12 Substrate Slides have twelve 6mm round reaction areas. Microarrays are spotted in each reaction area (well) and binding reactions are performed in each well with the SuperMask hydrophobic mask serving to partition each wells on the substrate to prevent cross contamination between experiments. Each well can have the same microarray. Figures 2 and 3 below provide some guidelines on how to manufacture microarrays in each well. SuperMask Substrate Slides may also be used in conjunction with 6 or 12 mm round cover slips using standard protocols and tools such as microarray hybridization cassette chambers, wash stations and microarray centrifuge. These tools provide for efficient low volume reactions and easy processing. In addition to the 4 and 12-well patterns, custom SuperMask Substrate patterns can easily be manufactured to meet your specific needs. Microarrayer Programming and Detection Manufacturing microarrays into the SuperMask Substrates can be accomplished easily with both the SpotBot® 2 and NanoPrint microarrayer product lines. Hybridized microarrays can be scanned using our SpotLight and Laser scanners, or microarray scanners from third parties that support the standard glass substrate slide format. See Figure 1 for the physical layout of SuperMask 4 Substrates and refer to Figure 2 for the physical layout of SuperMask 12 Substrates. Figure 3 and 4 show source plate loading pin configurations.

The SuperMask hydrophobic partition is 75 µm thick on a 0.94 mm glass substrate for a total thickness of approximately 1.015 mm. The 25 x 76 x 1.015 mm SuperMask Substrates are compatible with all industry standard open platform hardware and software products including all major brands of microarrayers and scanners.
